The Immortal Brigadier General
|
Kawanua collapses to the floor, the dagger having stabbed through his chest, the chilling tip just touching his heart. Blood slowly flows from his wound.
"If only your misery were so easy to end."
Blackrend is pleased with himself... he will bind the broken remains of Kawanua once the others are dealt with...
The Warp Lord watches Asaki fight with some amusement. He laughs out loud at her speech. Asaki, in her isolated darkness, hears the Warp Lord's reply
"Afraid? No, I am not afraid, because unlike you creatures, I am intelligent. I take precautions, I plan for the future. You short-sighted finites however merely live day to day, desperatly trying to tell yourselves that your will is your own, that your fates are in your own hands. It seems you were wrong all along."
Meanwhile, the Soul Reaver double reaches for Blooddrinker, which flies back into his hand. The warrior speaks a word of magic and swings the sword in an arc, sending multiple glittering bolts of blue energy flying from the blade at Asaki...
Yue gets no reply to her words... only a cacaphony of loud howls arise around her. There is more than one beast lurking in the shadows... she is surrounded completely. Even now, they are closing in. Something leaps towards her, some clawed, fanged monstrosity.
Yue catches a flash of the creature in front of her - though the face is smeared with blood, the mouth brimming with fangs, she somehow feels that she knows it... it is her mother...
Damien is surprised to find the darkness around him whisked away. He is once more in the chamber with the Warp Lord. Stavarus has crawled to a far corner, where he is crying silently to himself, but the others are nowhere to be seen.
The Warp Lord towers in front of Damien. He has crossed his three pairs of arms over his chest, while he hovers about half a metre above the ground. In a deafening voice, Blackrend speaks.
"Very well, Damien! I accept your challenge!"
Lightning-fast, the Warp Lord extends one hand, his palm facing Damien. A huge burst of chilling cold blasts from Blackrend's palm in the form of a massive beam. The attack completely envelops Damien in a blizzard of chilling, life-sapping cold and razor-sharp shards of ice. The hurricane-force wind is enough to slam Damien back several metres against a misshapen column. Ice and frost streak the ground nearby and crackle auidbly on the column.
Blackrend smirks.
"It may be enjoyable to toy with you for a while."
Meanwhile, Soul Reaver continues the battle against what looks to be his son, Darius. Tears flow from his eyes as he fights, but his mouth stays in a cold, hard line. Even the jeers of the decaying figures around him do not give him pause.
Blooddrinker hurtles through the air, sliding with a metallic scraping over Darius' sword, swings down and back up again in a clean, smooth arc.
Soul Reaver steps back as Darius lunges forward... it is just as it was all those years ago... how easy it would be to end it all now...
Soul Reaver makes his choice.
As he did millenia ago, Soul Reaver bats Darius' thrust aside, and counters with a blow of his own. Blooddrinker's tip slides through Darius' chest and blooms from his back as the young man slides all the way up to the hilt, disbelief, shock, and betrayal in his eyes.
Soul Reaver closes his eyes and gives a quiet sob at having to once again see the sight that has been branded into his memory from all those ages past.
Opening his eyes once more, Soul Reaver pulls Blooddrinker from the corpse and turns his back on the jeering dead, walking aimlessly into the darkness...
The darkness fades, and Soul Reaver finds himself in the chamber with the Warp Lord once more. He arrives just as the Warp Lord fires an icy blast of energy at Damien. Soul Reaver shouts,
"No!"
The Warp Lord's head whips around, his eyes glowing malevolently. A second face forms on Blackrend's shoulder, squinting at Soul Reaver mockingly.
"Welcome back. I suppose now I must finish the job!"
To Soul Reaver's horror, Blackrend swings his arm wide, projecting several thin ribbons of energy outwards from his aura. With only a split-second to react, Soul Reaver leaps into the air to try and avoid the worst of the attack.
Yet despite his efforts, part of the blast still catches him beneath his right arm and on the right side of his torso. The aura immediately vaporises flesh, muscle and bone, slicing his arm half-off and cutting a nasty wound into his side. Soul Reaver crashes to the ground with a scream of pain.
Before he can so much as muster a defense, a mass of glittering black threads burst from the ground around Soul Reaver and wrap themselves around him, cutting into his flesh as he struggles to keep them from garroting him. Gasping, Soul Reaver just manages to hurl a Power Bolt spell at Blackrend, only to see the glimmering green sphere snuff out the moment it hits his aura.
Soul Reaver gasps for breath as the tendrils tighten.
By Inferno! There must be some way of defeating him!!
Out of the corner of his eye, Soul Reaver spies Stavarus on the ground, crying uncontrollably. Soul Reaver sends a message his way.
Stavarus! What are you doing?! Why are you not helping us!!
Stavarus stops crying, and looks straight up at Soul Reaver. His eyes are hollow and sunken - he looks like his very soul has died.
"I cannot. I am a Daemon after all... no matter what I wish, what I do, I will always be a Daemon..."
As Blackrend laughs, Soul Reaver speaks to him more.
No, Stavarus! Do not let this creature fool you! Our fate is our own! Regardless of the body you may inhabit, your soul, your will, is still yours! It is through your actions that you can atone for the past and make your own future!
Failure is no reason to give up!
Stavarus looks up at Soul Reaver, his tear-streaked face expressionless and unmoved. Blackrend laughs aloud - he can hear every word Soul Reaver speaks to his companion.
"Stavarus, by now you already know the truth! The future was woven by me! It is not through your own choices, but through my own hand that you have become what you are now... and you have no ability to change that. Embrace the inevitable, Stavarus! There is no other choice!"
Stavarus, his face still stained with tears, lowers his head back down. Soul Reaver sees in dismay how his shoulders begin to shudder with sobs once more... and then Soul Reaver is forced to concentrate solely on survival...
