The Immortal Brigadier General
|
As Soul Reaver is about to dive down into the battle, there are suddenly flashes of blue light in the sky nearby. Without warning, several blue streaks of light fly down at amazing speed from the heavens, streaking towards the outer fringes of the tyranid forces most distant from the city.
One after the other, the blue bursts impact on the ground, throwing up vast quantities of sand. Once the sand settles, it becomes possible to see what sits at the centre of the craters.
(OOC (please read immediately))
They are strange metallic pods, still crackling with re-entry heat and pulsing with an inner blue light. The pulses increase in frequency until an electric sizzling becomes audible arcs of lightning zap from the pods just as the blue light flares brightly.
In bursts of sapphire light, armoured soldiers suddenly appear near the pods in squads of five. They are running as they arrive, their heavy suits apparently not hindering their movements. Right behind them, another squad appears, and another, and another
until streams of warriors are racing towards the genestealers.
The soldiers form into controlled lines, levelling their massive, forearm-mounted weapons at the growing hordes of genestealers. The front rank gets down to it knees, already opening fire as a second line takes position behind them. In moments, the third line stands behind them and opens fire as well.
The guns rattle at a deafening level, firing out huge masses of bullets. The genestealers, who are reacting to the new threat, leap to the side only to find the bullets trajectories adjusting in mid-flight to strike them down. The genestealers are shredded to pieces by the gunfire.
Meanwhile, behind the foot soldiers, massive robotic dreadnaughts are appearing from the pods. Shaking the ground with their back-jointed legs as they step forward, the devices have a hunched appearance, their heads set with red-lensed target acquisition devices.
The dreadnaughts step between the gaps in the foot soldiers line, aiming arm-mounted cannon at the genestealers. While machine-gun fire pours from the upper part of their cannons, there is an audible charging sound from the underslung cannon barrels. Suddenly, twin beams of blue light shoot from the cannons. The dreadnaughts make an arcing sweep with their beams
and two heartbeats after the passing of the beam, whatever was touched by the beam explodes in a fiery blaze. The squealing of burning genestealers and ripper swarms is clearly audible over the gunfire.
As the genestealers press in closer, the dreadnaughts spread their legs wider as two long, slender cannon position themselves over their shoulders. Still firing from their arm-mounted cannons, the dreadnoughts now also fire magnetically accelerated slugs from their newly prepped railguns. Every two seconds, the guns whine and fire, shooting fist-sized bullets through multiple rows of genestealers, leaving behind only carnage and a spiralling trail of uranium dust.
Recesses open within the dreadnaughts shoulder carapaces, and swarms of missiles fly out, first curving upwards towards the sky before making a sudden turn and flying directly downwards. Carpets of missiles impact in the midst of the genestealer swarms, blowing the creatures to pieces and throwing others through the air.
The sky darkens as a massive spacecraft descends slowly towards the battlefield. Smaller metallic specks can be seen descending from it, and soon these fighter craft are skimming close over the desert surface towards the battle.
Panels flick open under the wings of the fighters and three pairs of chainguns lock into firing positions. As they approach the genestealer positions, the fighter craft begin to take rapid evasive manoeuvres to avoid the incoming fire while they let rip with their chainguns. Each fighter clears a long strip of genestealers as passes over the swarms, before breaking off the attack and turning around to make another pass. Spent bullet casings fall like rain upon the tyranid hordes.
One of the fighters is shot down by a tyranids bio-cannon, and falls in a smoking blaze of flames into the genestealer hordes. However, another of the fighters unleashes two guided missiles at the offending tyranid, intending to blow it to pieces.
Suddenly, the beams of light begin to shoot from the ship above the battlefield, raking over the swarms of genestealers and disintegrating dozens of the creatures with every pass. The ground shakes every time one of the beams hits, and the sand explodes from the heat on contact.
Whoever these soldiers are, they are ruthlessly effective and manage to stem the growing tide of genestealers, holding their position despite all odds. By diverting the attentions away from the city, they succeed in keeping the genestealers from overrunning the marines and entering the civilian areas of the city
and they buy the companions valuable time in which to deal with the threat of the Hive Tyrant
