On Cadia, Cameron reaches into a box next to the scaffolding and pulls out a space suit. He tosses it to Mary.
"You better put this on. No air in these pods."
Mary nods as the shakes out the full body jumpsuit and begins putting it on over top of her clothes.
"As long as that thing you gave me stores my armor okay."
As if in response to this, Cameron fiddles with the bracelet on his right wrist, and is suddenly outfitted in a spacesuit identical to Mary's. Mary is startled, but recovers quickly.
"Okay, okay, it works. I get it."
Mary finishes donning her space suit, and both her and Cameron grab airpacks and helmets from nearby. After slipping the airpacks onto their backs and donning the helmets, Cameron and Mary make their way to the now completed scaffolding. In the center of the scaffolding, pointing straight up, is the rocket shaped craft the Techmarines have delivered: one of the McCragge planetary escape pods, originally designed to be used to escape from a planet that is slated to be destroyed. The smal two-seat cockpit of the craft is open, and a ladder leads up to it. The marines stand around the scaffolding, waiting on Cameron. He approaches and salutes.
"Are we ready to go?"
The lead Techmarine nods.
"All set. Just keep this thing at Mark 10.5 and don't let up on the accelerator, and you'll hit your mark."
Cameron and Mary both climb into the pod and close the cockpit. Cameron begins flipping switches and powering the small escape pod's engines.
"Mary, are you ready?"
Mary sits in the second seat and tries to clear her head. Her eyes still glow from the powerful warp energies seeping into Cadia from the Eye.
"As ready as I'm gonna get. Let's launch this fucker."
Around Cadia, the last of the 500+ warships move into position. Cadia is now completely surrounded with warships, all ready to enter the Eye as soon as a pathway is opened for them. On the bridge of the Revenant, Admiral Benden looks around at the mass of gathered warships.
"This is it. No turning back now."
On board the Starblade MKII, Kalana sits and waits for the command to move out.
Cameron, I sure hope you know what you're doing.Back on board the Revenant, Faidth feels a tap on her shoulder. Kari is standing behind her, holding a folded up female Grey Knight uniform.
"Excuse me... Faidth, is it? Kalana asked me to give this to you. It's all she really had to offer, but it's probably better then what you have now. And it's also flame resistant."
At that moment there is a burst of commotion from the men and women on the bridge.
"Look! There it goes!"
The escape pod lifts off from Cadia without any problems. As it leaves the atmosphere, Cameron struggles with the controls, trying to keep the small craft on course.
"We're almost there! Mary, are you ready?"
Mary says nothing. She sits with her eyes closed and her hands together. Purplish red warp energy begins to surround her as she builds up the energy needed for the wave.
THe companions and the people on the bridge of the Revenant can see a small rocket trail streaking towards the Eye. As it gets closer, it begins to glow a purplish red. The glow gets bigger as an ever growing ball of warp energy surrounds the small craft. Inside the craft, Cameron is using every ounce of strength and control he has to keep the now erratic escape pod on course.
"5 more seconds, just a little further..."
5 seconds later, the craft plunges into the warp storms. Nothing happens. There is some concerned murmuring on the bridge of the Revenant, and then, 10 seconds after the small craft had eneted the Eye, there is a blinding flash.
As visibility is returned, everyone can now see a huge tunnel of blackness leading straight through the warp storms that surround the Eye. THere is no hesitation from any of the marines, as all the battleships begin to move simultaneously. Benden shouts orders to the men on his bridge.
"All ahead full! Battle stations! Prepare all fighters and gunners! Have the troops start boarding the drop pods, and get the strike team there too!"
A marine runs up to the companions and directs them to follow him. After a brief stop to allow Faidth to re-equip herself, the companions are lead into the huge drop pod chamber Monitors all around the chamber show the forward view of the ship, which is now heading through the tunnel into the Eye. Lightning crackles from the edges and off of the ship's shields. In the drop pod chamber, Fully outfitted Grey Knight marines run every which way, equipping weapons and boarding drop pods. The companions are lead to an empty pod, and the marine speaks quickly.
"Okay, listen up! Lord Aileron says that we don't have the luxury of having you guys wait till the first wave of Thunderhawk landings, so you're coming down with the First strike team in the drop pods! This tends to get a bit hairy, but it's pretty damn safe as long as you don't get blown out of the sky, so you should be fine. These things will be launched at the strike zone and land HARD, so when you hear the alert siren, brace for fucking impact! The padding can only do so much! And get ready to fight as soon as these fucking hatches open, cause we're gonna be landing right in the middle of the bastards! We're out of time, so hop in!"
There are 6 rows of seats. 3 going from bottom to top on each side. The bigger companions will have to hunch over a bit to get inside. There are no windows, so as the companions climb in and take their seats, They lose sight of what's hapening outside. The marine closes the hatches of the pod, and for a brief moment, there is nothing but blackness. Then 4 small screens kick on, showing the companions the outside of the ship again.
The warships emerge from the warp tunnel into what can only be described as hell. The entire sky is the color of the Eye, a ghastly pinkish purple that fluxuates quickly. Dead planets hang in bizzare positions. None of them seem to hold any type of orbit. As the fleet passes through the dead planets, other planets appear. These are planets that are very much alive. Like the dead planets before them, these worlds have no particular position or orbit. Some of them are so close to each other that they look like they could crash into one another at any moment. The fleet ignores these worlds for the most part. Their target is the center of the Eye.
It can be seen up ahead. Not a planet, but what looks like it used to be the top half of a giant world. It is completely flat, with rocky outcroppings jutting down below the mass of land, and a huge mass of buildings, cultimating in a massive tower sticking straight out of the industrial mess, making the world look like two pyramids stacked against each other. A pyramid of earth pointing down, and a pyramid of tecnological chaos pointing up. A massive beam of warp energy is being blasted from either tip of this diamond shaped monstrosity. One stream is coming out of the outer most rock outcropping on the bottom, and the other is being blasted from the top of the huge spire. It is clear that this is how the Chaos forces are expanding the Eye. This is also obviously the capital, because this world is surrounded by Chaos capital ships and warships. The monitors in the dropships are patched into the Revenant's radio feed.
"Sir, that's it up ahead! Eidolon, the center of the Eye!"
"Okay, lets press in full! All ships, engage the fleet and let the Revenant get through. We'll drop our pods once the Revenant has made it into position!"Various radio chatter can be heard in the pod as the two massive fleets engage each other. Explosion rock the Revenant as it navigates its way closer to Eidolon. The drop pod shakes so hard at times that it feels like it is going to tip over. On the screen, the companions can see various battle cruisers attacking and being attacked. Fighters do battle outside of the ships. At one point, a Mayday is heard from one of the Black Templars cruisers, but it is cut off quickly, and an explosion causes the monitors to fuzz out for a second.
"
We just lost Hammer of Justice! The whole ship exploded!"
"SHIT! That was at least 1000 marines! Revenant, what's your status!"
"We have taken some damage but we're still okay! Do we know what happened to Lord Aileron's ship?"
"Revenant, this is Kalana Ryoki of the Starblade MKII.We cannot conform this, but the craft may have already crash landed on Eidolon. No word on survivors yet."
"Damnit. Revevant! Get into position as soon as you can!"
"Revenant, roger that."
"This is the IAS Corvanas! We are taking heavy fire and need assistance!"
"Corvanas, there are no ships close enough to help you! Stand by!"
"Corvanas reporting unidentified ships behind us!"
"Holy shit... Dark Angels???"The monitor shifts to a rear view, and the companions can see between two of te corrupted, almost alive looking Chaos battle barges, a set of 6 space marine ships bearing the symbol of a sword with angel wings. The ships move in swiftly and begin attacking the Chaos fleets.
They're Dark Angel vessels! They're attacking the Chaos!"
"Stay on task here, people! The Revenant is in position!"
"This is the Revenant! We're taking too much fire to launch! Get those ships off of us!"Something huge impacts with the Revenant's shields, and the companions are jolted by another huge explosion. Klaxons can be heard blaring fainly through the drop pod's hull.
"Revenant, this is the Unrelenting Fury of the Dark Angels leigon. We are assisting."
"Thank you. We are clear now. LAUNCHING DROP PODS!"
The monitors suddenly go blank. Karyl chuckles nervously.
"If I could reach my guitar, I'd play us some travelling music. It's fucking CRAMPED in here."
The Revenant is now hanging above Eidolon. A stream of drop pods begin to fall from the ship, lighting up as they enter the Chaos world's atmosphere. A few of them are taken out by ordinance from Chaos warships, but most of them make it into the atmosphere. The companions feel a brief feeling of weightlessness as the pod initially launches, and then they hit the atmosphere. The pod feels as if it is going to shake apart into thousands of pieces, and the tempature rises to about 95 degrees. Then the shaking stops, and the pot enters freefall. Seconds later, a small alarm begins to go off, just as the marine said it would. The companions have just enough time to brace for impact before the drop pod smashes intoa desolate plain, leaving a large crater. THere are loud crashing noises as other drop pods land around them, and the sound of gunfire can already be heard outside. The hatches begin to unlock. The companions will have a few seconds to prepare before they open.
I can't remember how this got started.
But I can tell you exactly how it will end.
